چکیده

It is customary to analyze transport industry structure using two indices: economies of density and economies of scale with variable network size (RTS). The latter has been defined to analyze the behavior of costs when output and network size expand simultaneously. After reviewing in detail what is intended with the calculation of RTS under this definition, we show analytically that, when the spatial aspects underlying transport production are taken into account, the seemingly reasonable conditions imposed on the aggregate output descriptions and the network variable in fact conceal implicit output expansions that are not uniquely defined: they happen to depend on the specification of variables and on the evaluation point. Furthermore, most of the multiple output expansions analyzed correspond to cases that are hardly instructive. We conclude that this index is inherently ambiguous, hardly contributes to an adequate analysis of transport industry structure and should be replaced by the calculation of economies of spatial scope. Modeling the efficiency of banks by cover data method and Genetic programming

Performance assessment of organizations in making strategic decisions for the future is essential. Thus, the efficiency determinations of organizations through planned economic growth in the future system loads are necessary. One of the most important indicators of performance evaluation is measuring efficiency. Banks are one of the most important economic units that provide proper conditions f...

Two-stage Production Systems under Variable Returns to Scale Technology: A DEA Approach

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a non-parametric approach for performance analysis of decision making units (DMUs) which uses a set of inputs to produce a set of outputs without the need to consider internal operations of each unit. In recent years, there have been various studies dealt with two-stage production systems, i.e. systems which consume some inputs in their first stage to produce ...

Creating Full Envelopment in Data Envelopment Analysis with Variable Returns to Scale Technology

In this paper, weak defining hyperplanes and the anchor points in DEA, as an important subset of the set of extreme efficient points of the Production Possibility Set (PPS), are used to construct unobserved DMUs and in the long run to improve the envelopment of all observed DMUs. There has been a surge of articles on improving envelopment in recent years. What has been done first is in Constant...

CALCULATION OF ECONOMIES OF SPATIAL SCOPE FROM TRANSPORT COST FUNCTIONS WITH AGGREGATE OUTPUT (with an application to the airline industry)

Transport network expansions have been usually analyzed calculating returns to scale with variable network size (RTS), which has been shown to suffer from a number of shortcomings because, in the end, it attempts to capture as a scale property what in fact is related with scope, namely the addition of new products when a transport network expands. In this paper we develop a method to calculate ...

An input-oriented radial measure for returns to scale aggregation.

In production theory, it is necessary to be capable of predicting the production func- tion’s long-run behaviors. Hereof, returns to scale is a helpful concept. Returns to scale describes the reaction of a production function to the proportionally scaling all its input variables. In this regard, Data envelopment analysis (DEA) provides a com- prehensive framework for returns to scale evaluation...
